Thinking of treating myself to a natty light tonight.

I haven’t had a drink in 30 years, but in my opinion, any beer that starts its life in a can should be drunk from the can. Good and cold, so perhaps the drinker doesn’t realize how bad the beer is.

Not sure about you guys, but down in Melb tall strong cans are all the rage right now. Not where where they’re coming from but it seems everything is 8%+, 440ml and like $15.
Things of this nature.
I hear it’s something to do with everyone being locked at home, so there’s no harm in sitting on some big beers since you’re not going anywhere. I think there’s more to it.

Just some cheap stuff for me tonight:
Also got some Lowenbrau which I haven’t had in years but was cheap. Am not drinking for taste tonight...

Those are standard cans here in the U.K. lol.

That’s just, wow. Tall cans have been “the thing” here for 5 years. Aside from a jump to $18-$20 for 4-packs 3 years ago (I blame Superflux), and the introduction of very limited barrel aged beers from the US in our market for $45-$60/bottle, prices for average craft brews are steady.
“I think there’s more to it.”
Oh, there’s something else there, all right...

I don’t judge, but why

Classic UK lol. You guys love a pint

I don’t mind fancy big strong specialty beers, especially barrel aged. Not at all. But at the moment it seems like that’s all we’re getting. I’m not sure we’ll ever go back to regular cans haha.
What sort of something else?!

Lol. Anything less would mean having to go back to the bar more often or having to open more cans.
When I heard an Aussie say he dra nk 16 stubbies in one evening, I had initially thought, ‘legend’. Then I looked up how big a stubbie was and thought, ‘meh, that’s just a good night out’.

There’s little to no money to be made in tasting rooms. It’s not until you get to beer hall size that they make money and even then, not much. They’re advertising and customer relation devices for the brand. If a brewery is saying their price increase is due to the effect COVID has had on their tasting room, they’re not tell the truth.
Distribution to the beer stores has become more difficult and expensive I’m sure, but $15 a can? Not buying it.
Same with ingredients, the cost to make the beer is very minimal. After the cost of floor space and initial equipment is taken out of the equation it’s much less than a dollar per can even for a low volume craft brewery .
This new tall can craze sounds to me like someone questioned what they could sell a new size for, deducted that if they’re asking then others must be asking too, and priced it to fill their pocket. Someone else then saw them doing it, and that person raised their price. And so on.
$15 a can sounds like gouging. Alcohol sales are off the hook.

A homebrew IPA to enjoy after a long week. Shhh ... I’m trying to forget it’s only Wednesday.
Too much head on it. I'm still trying to figure out my newly built kegerator. Pressure was too high, then too low, and then same for the temp. I think I'm getting close to correct.

From Ft. George brewing. Everything they make is great.

They’re called stubbies for a reason ;) I get it, but I’m usually trying different shit rather than sitting on the same thing all night. So I’ll get a smaller glass and try more.
If I’m on the same thing, pints all the way. Usually cheaper too per litre ;) Steins if I can get them.
It’s a moot point since we’ve not been allowed to go anywhere that sells stuff by the glass since July

One issue here is tax. Beer gets taxed pretty highly, higher if it’s higher alcohol. So probably there is some reason behind big strong cans being more expensive.
Of course for the price of that one 9% can, you could buy at least 5 litres of 13% wine. The system is a bit shit.

I can see several reasons, when you need to remind yourself of how much better other beers are or you want to be taken back to college for a night.

I’d usually stay on the same drink unless we go to a bar that doesn’t sell what I want to drink and then I’d go for something else I know unless something catches my eye and I fancy trying it.

The beers I see on OppO will get you laughed out of any garage around here. Enjoy the good stuff.

I’ve been on a Blue Moon kick for the past week. 6 pack an evening. Burned through the supply at 2 local gas stations so far. Luckily haven’t hit the 3 stations across the street, yet.

What’s your regular drink?
![]() 09/30/2020 at 23:09 |
|
Typically Budvar, Trooper and Guinness are my regular go toes.
Though I can easily drink Tyskie, Zyweic, Lech, Marstons Pedigree, London Pride, Spitfire, Old Speckled Hen and Newcastle Brown. It all depends what’s available.
Many pubs stock some but not others, then some may keep a different few, etc... if I’m out at a pub.
Guinness, Guinness Golden Ale, Guinness Dublin Porter, Guinness Hop House 13, Budvar, Warsteiner and Trooper are all great drinks I will not say no to.
You?

I see I see. Some of those are pretty available here, some I’ve not heard of. We get some Budvar, Zyweic and Old Speckled Hen. I don’t think anyone really drinks them but they’re in the bottle shops.
Guinness is everywhere, but it’s brewed here and I really don’t know how it compares to Europe’s Guinness. A mate of mine has some of the Euro stuff in stock that I’ve been meaning to go get. Lately I’ve been getting on the Guinness, me and a Qld friend have both been getting on it on video calls haha.
We don’t get anything other than regular Guinness and the Extra Stout.
I mostly drink Australian stuff which I assume is completely lost on you ;) Many people drink some variant of shitty lager like VB, or Furphy which is a local ale. I stick to mostly local weird craft stuff, pales/IPAs given the choice.

I’ve lost it on many craft ales and stuff, many taste like u tter pish with grapefruit flavours, tangerine flavours, etc... urghhhh.
The Guinness range has dwindled down a little since the craft stuff has taken off, another reason I’m hating craft ales, shops have limited sp ace and some of the established stuff has been put the the wayside to stock the craft stuff. Grrrr.
The Budvar and Old Speckled Hen are just so drinkable.
I love Old Speckled Hen for it’s automotive history, as I love beers, etc... that have history and a reason for being other than just because other breweries are doing something, they sort to do the same, etc...
Old Speckled Hen, from the MG anniversary, the name coming from the factory runabout, ‘the owld speckled un’.

Lol :(
For what it’s worth I think the craft thing will chill out a bit, not sure it can just keep growing forever. Novelty is only novel for so long

I certainly hope so, though if it is anything like alcopops from the mid-90s which lasted about 20 years. It could be a while.
W e are still in the prosecco era and the gin era, which started about 6-7 years ago.
Hopefully they'll not take as long to fizzle out.

Our gin is really taking off too haha. I don’t have my finger on the pulse like you do I don’t think.
